Spirit of Hope Campaign 2012
The downturn in the economy has made times especially tough for the high-risk students we serve. We are currently seeing more homeless kids, poverty stricken families, and out of work parents than at any other time in our twenty year history. Our students are coming to school without notebooks, poorly clothed, and often hungry. Many cannot even afford the bus fare to get to school.
Our Spirit of Hope campaign this year is devoted to meeting these needs, so that our students can come to school and be prepared to learn. With your support, Genesis can provide the school supplies, bus fare, breakfast and positive support that make the difference in helping high-poverty, at-risk youth succeed in school.
Genesis Rising Capital Campaign
Genesis has determined that it must expand its efforts to provide a successful environment for young people who are facing a lifetime of hardship due to a lack of accessible educational opportunities.
The $2.5 million Genesis Rising Campaign will support the Genesis City facility at 525 E. McDowell and its many programs.
To date, over $2.3 million has been secured in philanthropic contributions. View our honor roll of donors. »
Arizona School Tax Credit

The state of Arizona offers all residents the exciting opportunity to support Genesis City through the Arizona School Tax Credit program. By redirecting your tax credit to Genesis City, you can support extra-curricular activities for all our students in grades 9-12. This is a credit on your income taxes, which means you get every dollar back on your state return, whether you owe money to the state or the state owes you! Learn more »
Remember, you can decide how your Arizona state income tax dollars are spent! Make a $200 contribution to Genesis if single, $400 donation if married filing jointly, before December 31, 2012, and you will receive a dollar-per-dollar tax CREDIT, reducing your taxes due by the amount given - up to $400!
FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OFFICE
DO YOU HAVE A WILL?Most of us know we should have a will, and yet Consumer Reports estimates that 60% of us don't. In light of the expected $41 trillion intergenerational transfer of wealth over the next 50 years, our procrastination over wills is frightening. Without a will, the state will decide where our legacy goes, and even who will raise our minor children. Without a will, the state will choose an executor/administrator for your estate. Without a will, the administrative costs and taxes to your estate could far exceed those of an executor that you choose through your will. In simple terms, if you don't write a will, the state will write one for you.
Although there are numerous computer software programs designed to help you create a legal will, the best advice is to see an attorney. A simple will is not terribly expensive and provides peace of mind. And of course a legacy gift to charity can easily be put in the terms of your will or added to an existing will. Take the time to write or review your will. You'll be glad you did.
DID YOU KNOW?
If you are 70 and own an IRA, or a Roth IRA, you must take annual minimum distributions, and of course, these distributions are taxed as regular income. However, the IRS does allow direct distributions to charities from these IRAs, and while they do count towards the minimum distribution, they are not subject to regular income tax. (This is allowable under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which was extended through 2009 by the 2008 Wall Street "bailout" legislation.) The gift must be transferred directly to the charity from the IRA. This is especially helpful to those who do not itemize on their tax returns. This is a win-win for the donors and the charities.
